Movie Review: 47 METERS DOWN
Star Rating (out of 5): **
47 METERS DOWN is a thriller about two women who blindly hop into a rusty cage during a Mexican vacation for some fun with sharks. They wind up not having any fun with sharks.
When I saw the trailer, I was promised to a fun and unusual ride – sharks are always exciting, and you gotta admit it’s ballsy to have the majority of a movie play out in a cage on the ocean floor with two characters. But was the promise fulfilled?
The sharks look convincing and there are some thrilling moments throughout. Also, the movie has a cool twist toward the ending.
The two lead characters inside the cage must suffer from short-term memory loss. How else would you explain the fact that they constantly repeat the same info and never learn from their mistakes? The script doesn’t only deliver some of the most god-awful dialog I’ve heard in a while; it also paints its heroines as pretty stupid. Not to mention how badly this film berates women, who are basically defined by their ability to impress and entertain men.
Thrilling at times but disappointing over all, 47 METERS DOWN is what happens when a clever idea is drowned by too much B-movie dumbing down.
