Movie Review: SICARIO
STAR RATING (out of 5): ****
SICARIO is a crime thriller that actually manages to make Benicio Del Toro cool again, in that mysterious way Hollywood likes to surprise us with in its good moments. Oh, and Emily Blunt is in it too, as she and some FBI agents wage war on the Mexican drug cartel, even if that means bending the law in some ways.
Emily Blunt brings a very strong performance to this film as the female lead. Her character is deeply human and her reactions and decisions are understandable and perfect for each situation. Benicio Del Toro as the shady guy who helps the FBI (hey, that rhymed!), is very interesting and he does outstanding in bringing tension to this well directed film. The gritty realism throughout is nicely captured. It’s the perfect amount to show you what you’re dealing with, without ever feeling overdone.
There are a few boring and unnecessary scenes in this movie to set up certain things that are needed for the plot later. Also, toward the end, the film spontaneously shifts its focus from the lead Emily Blunt to Benicio Del Toro. While the movie kept engaging, I wouldn’t have needed such a radical change for the climax.
