Movie Review: THE REVENANT
STAR RATING (out of 5): ****
THE REVENANT is most likely Leonardo DiCaprio’s first successful attempt to win an Oscar, as he goes from casual Leo to extremely wounded Leo in his quest for vengeance after being left behind. And by quest I mean, Leo is crawling for a long time and then walking across the Louisiana purchase.
Leonardo DiCaprio does an outstanding job for his role, showing a tremendous amount of dedication. You really do empathize for his extremely difficult situation, and understand his motivations. The visuals are so out of this world, you’ll ask, “How did they get that shot?” a couple of times. Tom Hardy’s performance as the bad guy is excellent, too. Most of the cast does well, and the setting is captured well.
This movie is very long, and gets a little boring and repetitive in the second and third acts, especially on Leo’s adventure. There are also some unnecessary dream sequences Leo has. I didn’t think they really mattered, because what you see is what you already knew, or predicted.
