Star Rating (out of 5): ***
THOR: RAGNAROK is the third installment in the blockbuster franchise about the guy with the hammer. Chris Hemsworth stars as the God of Thunder, who must prevent the destruction of his home, Asgard, along with some familiar and new allies – this time without his hammer.
The movie boasts a unique style that neatly ties to its comic book roots with a stylish celebration of colors and costumes. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo and others provide likable performances. The narrative is well structured and the comedy bits well paced. Also contributing to the style is the electrifying soundtrack.
A couple times, the movie prefers style too much over substance. Some characters are far less developed than others, especially the antagonist. Even Cate Blanchett’s acting genius can’t save a villain without any layers. Although the script is clever, dialogue-induced scenes can get boring. There’s not a great balance of those and the fun stuff.
THOR: RAGNAROK is a relatively enjoyable comic book movie. It’s got some fun, but certain factors cause it to drag.
