Movie Review: GHOSTBUSTERS
Star Rating (out of 5): **
Reboot? – Check.
Unnecessary? – Check.
Looks like Ghostbusters is another venture into the land of unoriginality AKA Hollywood in 2016. Yet, the film seems to have one thing going for it: daring to ask what would happen if the ghostbusters were female. It sounded like an interesting idea to me, but the most disliked trailer on YouTube changed my opinion. So, after a visit to the theater – is Ghostbusters also one of the least likable films of all time?
(Yes, there is good!) Ghostbusters has some vibrant characters. Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones provided the best jokes, bringing energy to the cast. The humor does work sometimes.
The rest of the cast felt absolutely dead, and I don’t mean ghost dead. I mean DEAD! Kirsten Wiig was utterly boring. Melissa McCarthy served up the usual rehash of her standard movie performance, and in her case, too much of the same thing is not a good thing. As for the male characters, most of them are depicted as stupid. This felt a little strange, unless you don’t need any male viewers. But none of this really matters because the entire film, from the often stale humor to the clunky storyline, is phenomenally unexciting. I was ready to catch some Z’s by the time they had finally sleepwalked their way into the second act!
Ghostbusters is a dull waste of time. Its few vibrant characters are outmatched by the monotony of everyone and everything else. The comedy mostly falls flat.
